Where there is smoke…

Lindell Kay | Cesar Laurean,Closer Look,HOME PAGE | Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Dateline NBC conducted exclusive interviews with Onlsow County authorities at Comfort Suites in New Bern today. The Cesar Laurean case was their topic of discussion. A producer with the show said that Dateline just arrived in the area this week and that they are not sure whether they will run a segment on Laurean. However, sources in Wilmington tell me that Dateline has been in the area for some time and have had close contact with the FBI.

Above: Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown, Sgt. TJ Cavanagh and Capt. Rick Sutherland on the way out of their interview with Dateline greet District Attorney Dewey Hudson on his way in.

Below: Brown and Hudson talk. I think Cavanagh is considering arresting me.

Photos by Ed Caram. Ed is a true commando. When we lost the sheriff’s cruiser, Ed climbed on the roof of the Sheraton to find them.

Mike played spy and sat in the lobby. He said to mention how great the coffee was and how friendly the staff were.

  5. Thank-you so much Lindell for the awesome investigative reporting that you do!! You could have taken the day off and spent time with your wife and kids. Instead you work tirelessly to expose such awesome news content as this. However could you have known when and where to be for such a PERFECT shot? Your sources must be impeccable. (GUSH, GUSH) You do such Pulitzer type work.

  6. Thanks, Lindell, Mike, and Ed for the great work. Hope you enjoyed downtown New Bern and that your boss don’t give you too much grief over having to go two counties over with high gas prices.

  9. I just re-read the story. I hope Dateline will run a story. If they decide not to it will be because of too many ‘no comment’ answers. I do not want the case compromised, but surely SOME information can be released.

  11. This may mean nothing to many but to media geeks in general and to newspaper nerds (I count myself among their ranks) in particular take a moment to chew over these statistics.

As you know, the newspaper industry appears at times to be falling over one another in order to out do other newspapers with stories about our own demise. Fortunately,The Daily News’ management doesn’t believe that and our numbers support the fact that we have held up our circulation numbers (we get independently audited on a frequent basis. This exercise drives our Publisher and Circulation Director, both of whom are great newspaper guys and good people to boot, nutz, but it proves to our advertisers and readers that our numbers are legit.

Each day The Daily News penetrates over 40% of our area’s households with that number climbing to near 50% on Sunday. (The most watched TV show of the year, the Super Bowl registers a “high 40″s number for the game…we do it every Sunday!)

Contrast that to the NBC’s Dateline’s numbers. According to Nielson Media Research for the week of April 21 – 27, that show garnered 6.7 million viewers (remember there are 299,999,999 million of us here in the USA, it’s really 300 million but Cesar’s still in Mexico—when’s he coming back Lindell???) and was ranked as the 48th most popular show for the week. Dateline’s penetration is 2.2% of households.

….brace yourself, here comes the really obvious newspaper biased statement….Other media would kill to have our penetration numbers. Perhaps that’s why New York Susie from Dateline had her feathers in an uproar when Lindell, Ed and I crashed their little historic waterfront tete-a-tete. Afterall, we’re just a couple of local yokels far removed from the glitter and pomp of 30 Rock. What do we know!

Having said that, I too hope NBC airs this show and provides more insight than we know now. When and if we find out when the show will air, we’ll be sure to post it here.

  13. Thanks Mike and Lindell you guys are awesome! I will await to hear when your debut will be nationally on Dateline…how huge is that! You guys should be proud! That is huge! Not to belittle the reasoning for the chance.

  14. Mr. Kay:
Your second photo begs for this caption:

What Can Brown Do For You?

“…..I might be wrong Sheriff, but I was told my Dateline interview segment was going to be packaged as a 12-hour miniseries like Alex Haley’s, Roots.

That’s why I ordered more video tape for their cameras and had them express shipped here to the hotel via UPS….perhaps you can have TJ hump the boxes into the suite while I go into makeup….”

  15. LooseLips: Some trials have been televised. Not a bad idea, really, but what about witnesses? My understanding is that witnesses are not permitted in the courtroom to hear the testimony of other witnesses. Am I correct? So, how are witnesses prevented from viewing the contributions of other witnesses?

    Comment by justice4all — April 30, 2008 @ 11:17 pm

  16. Justice4all, I’m not sure “LooseLips” is qualified to answer anything but inner rumblings of his apparently addled mind, so I will say what I know to be true.

I suppose there are special cases, but in every trial I have covered many of the witnesses sat in the gallery for the whole trial. And if witnesses were not allowed in the courtroom before their turn to testify, that would really complicate situations where the defendant took the stand. :)

  17. Hello Lindell. Any chance of you travelling to Nevada to interview the parents and sister of Cesar Laurean?

    Comment by MPLS — April 30, 2008 @ 11:46 pm

  18. Lindell Kay: Thank you. Actually, in my county I have been in court and have seen the DA (State’s Attorney) ask all witnesses to leave the courtroom; this was for second-degree assaults, so I was wondering. Having witnesses sit in the gallery would be convenient for recalling, though. Could witnesses change stories as they heard others’ testimonies?
