COLD CASE FILES

Lindell Kay | Cold Cases, HOME PAGE | Saturday, June 21st, 2008
Right now there are at least 25 unsolved homicides in Onslow County, Jacksonville and aboard Camp Lejeune. The Daily News has featured nine cases so far in a special cold case series. The following is a recap of those cases. I have included blog-exclusive updates (because they come from confidential sources - something my editors shy away from unless absolutely necessary) where they are available: * Bruce Edwards Meyers, 59, disappeared June 1, 1974. His body was removed from a tributary off the Intracoastal Waterway behind what is now Herrings Outdoor Sports at 701 N. New River Drive on July 20 of that year.

bruce-meyers.jpg

Meyers, a fry cook at Barnacle Bill’s Pier, could not swim, and investigators said the people who remember him said Meyers would never go near the water.

The Surf City Police Department recently received information from a former resident who said the drowning was not accidental.

The whole story is here.

* Karen Lanham was raped, beaten and buried in a wooded area behind a house off Piney Green Roadin 1990. karen-lanham.jpg

Jamie Gunn drew a map to Lanham's body in 1992 while awaiting trial for another killing in the area.

jamie-gunn.jpg jeff-vavla.JPG Gunn, 45, and Jeff Vavla, 43, convicted of murder in the death of William Albert, remain investigator's prime suspects in Lanham’s death.

The two were never tried in Lanham’s death due to a lack of physical evidence in the case.

The whole story is here.

* Brian Bogle was found stabbed to death in his taxi Nov. 12, 1986.

brian-bogle.jpg

His cab was parked in front of Brynn Marr Village Apartments at Village Drive and Pine Valley Road. He still had his wallet, watch, wedding ring and fare money when his body was discovered.

Bogle, a native of New York, was a Navy veteran who had been stationed at Camp Lejeune.

The whole story is here.

* Marine Staff Sgt. Andre Bullen, 26, and Nigel Bullen, 23, were shot multiple times with an assault rifle in September 2005 when they entered their Hunters Ridge Drive home. bullen-crime-scene.jpg

The double-homicide was gang-related, investigators said.

The Bullens' roommate, Leslee Calixte, an active-duty Marine at the time, remains a person of interest in the case.

The whole story is here.

UPDATE: The cops have an important piece of evidence in this case. I wouldn't be surprised if this case was closed by arrest sooner than later.

* Sharon Sager, 34, Tyler Dash, 13, and Connie Smith, 12, were found with their throats slit in base housing aboard Camp Lejeune in 1981.

Federal investigators say they know who killed the three family members, but a series of jurisdictional technicalities prevented them from ever prosecuting their suspect — Carlton “Butch” Smith, a relative of the three victims who was 15 years old at the time. carlton-smith.jpg

However, reporters that covered the case as it unfolded say there was evidence that someone else committed the grisly homicides — a bearded man that military authorities looked for, but never found.

The whole story is here.

UPDATE: Right after this story ran, I got a call from a person that proved to know Smith when Smith lived in Oregon in the 1980s. That person told me Smith talked about killing his family.

* Jane Doe 95-7000, an unidentified female skeleton, was found by a surveyor in 1995 in the woods behind Courts Plus on Marine Boulevard.

Jacksonville police have not ruled out foul play as the cause of death, but the woman’s death has not been ruled a homicide since her skull and other bones show no overt sign of injury.

jane-doe-95-7000.jpg

Found with the skeleton were some subway tokens, a motel room key, white Nike tennis shoes, a pair of eyeglasses, a red sweat shirt, black jeans, and some jewelry.

The whole story is here.

UPDATE: The NCIS Cold Case Unit has recently reviewed this case with the JPD.

* Katherine McFadden, 18, was found dead, her body badly decomposed and wrapped in a mattress pad aboard Camp Lejeune in November 1980. katherine-mcfadden.jpgMcFadden dropped out of school during her senior year to go to work on Court Street as a prostitute. She returned to school and graduated, but returned to Court Street during the summer of 1980.

The NCIS Cold Case Unit is evaluating the possibility of reactivating the investigation after inquiries and information from The Daily News, said Paul O’Donnell, a spokesman for NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The whole story is here.

UPDATE: A local cops says he arrested McFadden's killer on a separate charge years ago. The cops says he knows this guy killed her, but can't prove it. Also, I tracked McFadden's father to a rest home in California.

* Shannon Clegg, 16, and Detric Howard, 20, were found dead in Howard’s mobile home on Lake Cole Road in 1999.

A cold case investigation into the double homicide led detectives with the Sheriff’s Department to the leader of a major drug trafficking operation.

jonathan-wilson.jpg Jonathan Wilson is serving nine years in prison after a 2004 conviction for running a continued criminal enterprise.

Detectives obtained a taped confession from Wilson, but prosecutors say the recording is too distorted to be used in court.

The whole story is here. A follow-up story is here.

* Princess Ann Allen was shot and killed on a street behind the Jacksonville Police Department in January 1993.

Police saw a compact silver-colored car leave the scene.

Allen was believed to be a prostitute working the downtown bus station at the time. Investigators said there are people in Jacksonvillethat know what happened to her.

The whole story is here.

  1. I’ve griped about this before. Crimestoppers is offering $2500 for information leading to an arrest in these cases of homicide. About two months ago, Crimestoppers offered $2500 for information leading to an arrest of the person who damaged the precious greens at the Country Club. Crimestoppers needs to get it’s priorities straight.

  2. Sean,

The Crime Stoppers reward is “up to $2,500.” When a tip pans out the Crime Stoppers board votes on what the reward should be. I am sometimes in attendance at Crime Stoppers board meetings when the vote is cast on how much to pay out. They try to match the reward with the crime. A tip on one of these homicides would more than likely top out, tips for crimes like tearing up the golf course would come in much lower.

  3. Gotcha. Almost like bait-and-switch advertising. Nah, too harsh. More along the lines of reading the fine print. $2500 is still a paltry sum to pay out for the murder of a human being. And the verbage that equates it with the cost of golf course damage sticks in my craw.

Lindell, since you sit on some of these board meetings, how about a story of how Crimestoppers is working? It seems rare that we hear about crimes being solved through Crimestoppers (I do recall one, recently. Can’t remember…). If they are paying out money on a frequent basis, shouldn’t it be publicized to show that it supposedly works?

  4. Lindell, great stories. Someone might just read about it and know something. One LE person once told me that they get a considerable amount of information form angry “significant others,” and I wouldn’t doubt it. The pictures are great. Pictures bring it to life for me.

  5. Lindell, thank you for the updates and the stories of these victims. I will never understand people who feel they have the right to murder/end the life of other human beings. The murderer is so brave while committing the act, then cowers like the coward he/she is when caught.
It breaks my heart for the unidentified dead/ murdered.
Justice4all, yes, pictures do personalize the story. I appreciate the pictures also.

  6. Lindell, in Karen Lanham’s case, if Jamie Gunn drew a map to Karen Lanham’s body, why isn’t that good enough to convict him?

  7. A name that needs to be added to the cold case files is- William Donald Miller,
    date of death 9/16/1972, 11:30pm. Document #6780 and Cert# 34146.
He was found laying on the road on Western Blvd. Shot in the head and back.
All indications point to his wife and her lover, however, they were not even tried
for this offense. Justice is due my brother. He is not forgotten!

  8. Jennifer Hamilton Morton

Her murder was huge news, then nothing. What happened to Jennifer? She was the mother of a toddler and a newborn, beaten to death and dumped in an abandoned apartment.

  9. Please feature the story of Jennifer Hamilton Morton. She was a good friend of mine in elementary, jr high, and high school. I often wonder about her and her family. She was an only child and left behind 2 young boys. She was a very beautiful young woman!

  10. I too would like a story on the Morton case. I was in middle school at the time and it was such a huge story, then nothing. Who killed this woman?

  11. Is 1947 too old for a cold case? I have an interesting story if you contact me.

  12. I just watchhed Dateline and got the name Lindell Kay as a person who solved a 1972 cold case. My husband was shot in the head in 1975. The case has never been solved and nobody has ever been arrested for this murder. Maby you could help me Mr. Kay. Please respond to this e-mail with a phone number I can call you at, as I do not want to publish my phone number.

  13. I got a mystery for you Sherlock Kay. What happened to all my shrimp? Why did all that beer keep disappearing after hours? Think you can step away from the Dateline cameras long enough to answer that? You shrimp snatching, Darth Vader snoring terrible excuse for a security guard.

  14. I am working on a 21-year-old case about a 17-year-old boy who vanished from a rural Linwood, KS. pre-graduation party in 1988. Neither Randy Leach nor his mother’s 1985 Dodge 600 have been seen since then. The law enforcement has been pretty useless. Either they are unconcerned or connected some some way in the case. I am co-writing a book about the case and have made a website: http://www.randyleach.com.
Please visit the site and offer suggestions, or if there is a way that Lindell Kay would be willing to tackle it, that would be great. Just don’t expect any support from the KBI or sheriff’s office.

  15. Sharon, my heart goes out to you, so sorry for your loss, the same to you kelly and donna, i am amazed what i am learning about these unsolved cases, people are not even aware! we can bitch about crime stoppers but at least we have them and for the frustrated family and friends of these cases and so many more, it must be better than no reward at all, yes? where does the money crime stoppers offers come from? and how do they “match the reward to the crime”? am going on cindy’s site now, good luck cindy.

  16. (Charites) I too think the same way since Ive have found out that I was someone to be apart of this case (William Miller family relation to the suspects ) to such a horrible crime done and never solved. How sad to think that …what? Nobody was ever brought to some better conclusion of what happened to all these people who died the way they did. That they are killed and never to know of exactly what happened and someone should pay for their actions to what they did to them?
Its all saddening to me. To see not just the Miller case but even these ones on this blog. I feel for anyone who is connected to any of those people. All their pain and not knowing what happened or that someone didnt pay the price for their actions? Give up on what is something that was never been solved? All these killer are still on the loose. No one is ever brought to justice….how would we all feel if we knew how many killers (unsolved horrible murders) that go unsolved and these killers are still out there.
Its all to crazy if you ask me and very very sad.

I too hope that Sharon you will have your day in court to understand what justice is truely about and all the other cases…..Never give up!!!!

  17. Oh Lindell I wanted to ask you if it was ok to put this blog on a facebook cause page that I had started myself for the Miller family and my family as well. I think it will inspire people to understand what it is to be a victim to all cases that are related to unsolved and the support they could use in people who may know something to them.
Please get back to me through the comments. I check them regularly. I have enjoyed your writting and reading what you write since me finding out everything. Thank you again

  18. Lindell, the Dateline article was excellent. I like the green sneakers shirt. A big question I have had was answered, too. It looks like the shot in the back was the first shot and the shot in the head was the second.

Good for sister, Sharron, too to state so clearly how Bill felt about Georgie moving in. That knocks holes in the lawyer’s lame excuse of a ’70’s thing.’ The lawyer was a decade out of whack too because that ‘commune’ stuff was SIXTIES!!!!

The style of the Dateline article was one of the best I have seen. The producers put out a smooth story that told itself and unfolded naturally.

  19. I’ve got a case that is not cold, but needs attention immediately. My nephew was shot, and instead of arresting the scum that killed him they are being treated like good old boys. Yes the case is in Texas. Could use your help. Please e-mail me if you could get interested, as I know your plate is full right now. I too saw Dateline last nite. Thanks.

  20. Mr. Kay, I saw the Dateline report and wanted to ask for your help. I’m sure you are getting tons of mail from “Cold Cases” My story is of my mother and a brutal stabbing in 1985 in Clearwater Fla. If you would be willing to hear my story Please feel free to e-mail me. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank You. Jillian McCorkindale Benson

  21. Mr. Lindell I saw your story on Dateline and what to make you aware of a missing persons case that took place several years ago involving my aunt and her pet parakee, Otis.

Both were avid readers of Carole Moore’s column.

My aunt was religious about opening the Sunday local section of the Daily News and reading Moore’s witty column every Sunday and her feathery friend, “Otis” enjoyed having his cage lined with previous submissions of her wordy missives.

Mysteriously, she vanished along with Otis never to be found again.

    Can you help us?

    Please email me at ucantreadme@yahoo.com

    Bless U

  22. JENNIFER HAMILTON MORTON

For those who have been interested & supportive in the Jennifer Hamilton Morton case, thank you for your interest. The case is still unsolved. However, the family has always felt they knew who the murderer was but has never been proven.
I pray one day, someone will do the right thing and come forward. I feel sure someone, somewhere knows something.

  23. Sherri, I was reading on another page and there was something about Sefton D. Isn’t that the grandad of David Morton? Can you comment at all on it? The idea I got from reading the post was that grandad had just died.
