Prison fire a point to ponder

Lindell Kay | Closer Look | Saturday, February 18th, 2012

With so much talk about the new Onslow County Jail’s smoke control system lately, it’s disturbing to see what happens when such a system doesn’t work…or is nonexistent…

County Manager Jeff Hudson said it was better to be delayed than to rush into the building and then have a tragedy.

While not a new building by any stretch, this week’s Honduran prison fire shows what could happen in a worst case scenario. The Honduran fire killed hundreds of inmates in the worst prison fire in a century.

In a six degrees type of connection, the construction worker who died building the Onslow County Jail was from Honduras.

  1. Ay caramba! They tried to lure me and my cousin to over see the building of the prison in Comayagua. My cousin — spent many a day leaning against a chain linked fence sipping coffee and smoking smokes while watching over a new jailhouse get built — north of the border was tempted by the warm climate, delicious fresh coffee grown right on the nearby hillsides and the freshest cigarette tobacco available for pennies per pack but we both said no way Jose! I’m glad we did.
