A long shadow

Lindell Kay | Closer Look,Marine Corps | Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Marine Col. Daniel Lecce is always first to crack a joke about his diminutive height, but there is nothing small about this Devil Dog.

Lecce tackled tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms and wildfires during his two years as commander at Camp Lejeune.

Read about his last few days on the job.

Read about the change of command.

Read his well-deserved Legion of Merit commendation:

Lecce is headed to Miami where he will be the new Judge Advocate at U.S. Southern Command.

A general has been brought in to command Lejeune and oversee all the bases on the East Coast.

It’s not often that a general has to follow the lead of a colonel, but to paraphrase a three-star general that spoke at the ceremony today, Lecce has set the pace for all future base commanders.

As an old sailor, I don’t get all that excited about military stuff these days, but to say Lecce is the best Marine that I’ve ever known would be an accurate statement.

Sempi Fi, Dan.

  1. Colonel Leece is a true credit to the United States Marine Corps. I have come to admire him as a marine and someone who thoroughly understands the necessity of a cooperative relationship between MCB Camp Lejeune and the local government. Dan, if you read this blog, I wish you the best in your future career and the best to your family.
