I’m Sorry, Geraldo

Lindell Kay | Cesar Laurean, HOME PAGE | Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Update: since the sat truck had to go, I won’t be on Geraldo now. I was supposed to be on national TV and had plans to drop in at the Clinton thing too Saturday, but couldn’t do either one. I hope the paper appreciates my priorities.

What happened to me and Geraldo? Well, I was to go on at 8:30, but at the last minute, the Laurean story the paper had been working on changed and I had to choose between Geraldo and the big story. I am a print journalist so I went with the story. The producer was cool - a lot cooler than Ben Finley was when I did it to him in January. Anyway, I will be on Geraldo’s other show Sunday. Y’all might like the story me and Mike wrote about the Laurean case for Sunday’s newspaper. And to make for failing to be on TV, I will say this: Investigators have confirmed that Maria’s car was not at the bus station for the three weeks she was missing. There were some confusing reports at first, but detectives talked to everyone and separated the credible witnesses from the not-so-credible ones. The car had been moved around to different locations from Dec. 14 up until just before Jan. 7 when Maj. Terwilliger and two of his detectives found it. I ran some questions by Capt. Sutherland and he confirmed that the car had been moved around town and detectives know where it had been. Then he slammed the door on me.

But not before I got him on the record about something the newspaper has been under court order not to discuss. Now that Laurean is in custody, the newspaper has written a story about the court order and another interesting piece of news. The story is in the hopper and will be online and in print Sunday.

  1. Can you find out why they are so sure christina knew nothing at all bout what when on in her house. Is she really that stupid or blind? Is the ocsd that blind or do they want a conviction that bad that they beleive every word she says. They need to remember the o j trial. I really hope they are just saying this stuff. As for the diary, I think her lawyer gave her good advice as to write it and what to writein it so when ocsd found it and it gets used in court, It will be poor little christina. Sorry I dont buy any of it.

  2. Lindell, I wouldn’t miss you on Geraldo for anything! (even writing in my diary). And I’ll be standing at the end of my driveway in the morning waiting for my JDNews!

  4. Lindell, can you give us a clue as to what you and Geraldo will be discussing tonight. While I appreciate you possibly devoting some time during your segment to give the viewers a geography lesson as to where Cesar was captured in Mexico, I’d much rather have this NAGGING question answered or at least discussed. It’s a simple question yet gets somewhat entangled because it involves the “love” relationships of three (Maybe 4) individuals: Cesar, Christina and Maria (and perhaps some other unknown male)

Dewey Hudson is quoted in your paper today as saying that “I feel confident that she was torn (Christina) between what occurred and the love of her husband. She still has love for him. It’s obvious.”

OK, I get that: Christina STILL loves Cesar.

Let’s continue, again citing statements from your story today.

An unidentified AP reporter quoted Cesar, after he was arrested Thursday in Mexico. He was asked if he killed Maria Lauterbach, Cesar replied in a pithy manner, “I loved her”

OK, that too I get: Cesar LOVED Maria

Back to Dewey Hudson. You reported that he (Dewey Hudson) was waiting to receive Laurean’s DNA, and he knew military authorities were holding off testing any other possible father for Lauderbach’s unborn baby.

OK, so perhaps Maria was inpregnanted by someone other than Laurean and thus may have LOVED someone else.

Lindell, here’s the $4,723 question. If Maria’s child was fathered by someone other than Laurean….

    …..WHO DID MARIA LOVE?

  5. Justice4All:

I find your writngs to be insightful, timely and thought provoking.

If this saga makes it to trial in Onslow County, I hope you’ll be present. If so, I’d like to make your aquaintance and invite you to discuss this case over the best darn home cooking this side of I-95, Hilda’s Restaurant. It’s an Onslow County institution.

    Keep your synapses firing.

  6. Thank you MonteDog for your kind and gentlemanly words. I tried to post on the jdnews an hour or two ago and it just didn’t upload at all. My grief over this whole situation is that my youngest is a Marine, deployed recently from Camp Lejeune, and he is just 6 months younger than Cesar. It is almost impossible to look at such young people and know that their lives are blasted. I have repeatedly said I believe in the presumption of innocence. I was deeply troubled by the comment by Cesar, “I am not going to the pen for this.” (IF that is an exact quote, it came from Bruce Shifflet’s tv interview and could be just Mr. Shifflet’s own words.) Also, “I loved her” could mean a host of things. It did sidestep a yes/no answer and has certainly provoked a lot of thought. I have a huge amount of respect for Sheriff Brown and the Team. I can feel the Sheriff’s commitment to decency. Also, note that Cesar (if the email is genuine) appealed to Sheriff Brown for guidance. That speaks volumes about the Onslow County Sheriff and the Department, and the American Justice System. Sure, we have people taking 5 years and more exhausting appeals, but here we do have innocent until proven guilty. Every time ONE person’s rights are safeguarded, ALL persons’ rights are safeguarded. I hope Cesar’s seeming disorientation and “trance” was not caused by rough handling. PLEASE, READERS, DON’T LEAP OUT AT ME. What I mean is, we have to make sure WE behave rightly because 2 wrongs, or any number of wrongs do not ever make a right. I don’t know if I could ever be a defence lawyer because they seem to dream up loopholes from whole cloth, BUT, I am so torn on this case. I wonder if some of what we are hearing is “please, Brer Fox and Brer B’aar, don’t throw me in the briar patch?” Puts me in mind of shakespeare with, “methinks …..protesteth too much.” Also, J. Sirica has some very intersting ideas. I am not sure I have quite the brain to figure out all that is in those messages, but I get the general gist. Very clever. My heartfelt condolences go out to Mrs. Laurean Sr. wherever she is. I can hardly imagine her agony at seeing her boy chained up, especially the red mark on the left wrist. I see later, or maybe it was actually earlier when the pic was taken, that there is one of those narrow bracelet things on that wrist. I read Nancy Grace. The psychologist there said body language was relaxed. I believe Cesar has done the right thing. Even if he is guilty and has whatever in the way of punishment it is a first step in the repentance process. He and the rest of us will meet our Eternal Judge one day. it always keeps me humble and thinking that we are all here to help each other. Cesar ought to have faced the music 3 months ago. I thought Mrs. Lauterbach was very kind and generous in what she said about the families. Hope this moves along fairly quickly. I read somewhere that he has been through the first stage of the extradition and that it is moving faster than in previous times. Too bad it will take the Justice Dept 60 days to do all the paperwork. Cesar needs to come back to the Onslow County Luxury Hotel. He will need a good lawyer. The State will provide one if he is indigent. Sure hope those suffering parents don’t put their house into hock to provide one for him, but I suppose any parent would do everything they could to ensure a fair shake. The senior Laurens will probably still be thinking in terms of what their homeland jails and philosophies are like. They are probably suffering more than their boy. Once a parent always a parent.

  7. Justice4All: from your words “Thank you…..to your words, parent always a parent.” I do not disagree with any word you wrote. Interesting use of the Uncle Remis classic tale, too!

  8. Does anybody know anything about those notes that were left when Cesar left? How could we tell it was really his handwriting? Also, that AMW video does show a man of roughly Cesar’s build but there does not seem to be a tattoo showing on that right arm. That is the tattoo of the supposed skull over some waving lines. Unless Cesar used pancake makeup (Max Factor Pancake or similar) over the tattoo.

  9. If they were truely handed over to LE by Christina, then either NCIS or OCSD is in possession of said notes.

  10. Lindell, man, where were you on the Gerado at Large Show? Did Gerado drop you??? I made an effort to clean up the “dog” house and popped a fresh bag of popcorn in anticipation of seeing you on TV an getting some first hand insight on how LE tracked down Laurean.

I should have taken up my neighbor’s offer of tickets to the Azalea Festival in Wilmington. (Hey, BTW, to anyone who happened to be in Wilmington today, was that Dewey Hudson wearing a tiara and sash and waving from the lead float in the parade?)

  11. Lindell, I think you made the right choice going with the story. I am sure that everyone is very interested in reading it. Can’t hardly wait myself. I knew that they said when they found the car that they said it wasn’t there before, so even when a witness had supposely said that it had been there the whole time, I did not believe it. Some people will do anything to try and get their name in the paper or their picture on the news, it is ashame that Christina is not one of those types.

  12. Lindell, it’s okay you weren’t on Geraldo…this is better, much better!!

I am so glad Captain Sutherland has finally released the info on when Maria’s car was parked at the bus station. I had always felt that her car wasn’t there the entire time. With as many deputies, JPD officers who go to Checker’s on either a regular or semi-regular basis, I knew they wouldn’t have missed seeing her car from Dec. 14th until Jan. 7th.

I am wondering if Laurean had help moving Maria’s car from place to place? He sure was taking a lot of chances by moving it each and everytime.

Now I would like to know who spilled the beans on the different locations that Maria’s car was parked?

    THANKS Lindell!

  13. LittleBit, I would also like to know who spilled the beans also. Whoever kept moving the car had to have help because they had kept using a taxi to get back to their vehicle, then a cab driver would have come forward. The story is getting more interesting as we go.

  14. thats my question also about the car. who, when where. how they found out about all the moves and places.
