Miller press time

Lindell Kay | Closer Look, Cold Cases, reporting demystified | Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Here are a few photos Daily News photographer Don Bryan shot today:

(Feel free to laugh at the size of my ever-more-balding head. And I just want to tell my drill sergeant dad that here is proof someone can get a decent job without shaving every morning). Click thumbs for bigger pictures:

N.C. SBI Special Agent Cecil Cherry, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown and NCIS Special Agent Wayne Mixon - they represent the three main law enforcement agencies involved in the Miller investigation although there were many more along the way.

Me answering questions outside the newspaper. Much easier than the last time the TV news people were after me.

Wednesday’s press conference. Yes, that is NCIS Special Agent in Charge Paul Ciccarelli in the background. Paul and I are learning to play nice after a few dust ups. He is actually a very intelligent, capable cop. (And next to Sheriff’s Col. Mark Shivers, probably the best dressed.)

Check out this cool link to a Honolulu Star-Bulletin article about how the real NCIS inspired and consulted with the makers of the CBS drama ‘NCIS.’

I have an article coming in Sunday’s paper about how cold cases are investigated with info from several agencies including NCIS. And tomorrow I will be posting copies of George Hayden and Vickie Miller Hayden Cooper Babbitt’s handwritten statements from 1972.

Now go back and study that last picture. Check out the incredulous looks of the reporters. I think that was about the time the sheriff said the D.A. wasn’t at the press conference because he just got back from vacation. Is that really why he wasn’t there?

  3. Sure am looking forward to seeing those statements, Lindell. Handwritten, no less! As long as people are literate enough, and calm enough to write their own statements it is a great idea. No one can then say that “words were put in” or anything like that.
